Georgia on My Mind
It looks like a lot of native born Georgians are keeping Georgia on their minds. According to the Pew Research Center Georgia ranked third in “sticky states”, states that hold on to their native-born population. “Stickiness tells you how attractive a state is to the people who were born there,” said D’Vera Cohn, a senior writer with the Pew Research Center. Over 69% of the people born in Georgia are still living there. Only two states, Texas and North Carolina, held on to a higher percentage of their natives. The study concluded that there are many reasons as to why natives stay in their home state. Some of which include strong family ties, weather, and job opportunities. According to Ken Stewart, a commissioner with Georgia Department of Economic Development, some of Georgia’s stickiness can be attributed to job opportunities and HOPE scholarships. As for Atlanta, the city’s diversity, strength of its cultural and arts community are big draws, he said.
